CALERA JUNIOR HIGH COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
 
LANGUAGE ARTS
7th Grade Language Arts: This class focuses on grammar, writing, and spelling lessons throughout the entire school year. Emphasis will be on preparing for the core curriculum tests in the spring. Some examples are: Nouns, verbs, adjectives, subjects/predicates, diagramming sentences, capitalization, punctuation, pronouns, prepositional phrases, the writing process, and 4 modes of writing, which are narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive. (Mandy Thompson)
8th Grade Language Arts: To reach a high level of achievement in language arts, it is necessary to focus on learning and teaching the processes of language arts as well as the content of language arts. Though they are defined separately, the process skills should not be viewed as separate units of study.  The language arts curriculum should integrate some or all of the process skills into content centered lessons. Curriculum guides have been developed for all grades with objectives for each grade or course modeled after the P.A.S.S. revised May 2000 and published by the State Department of Education.  All grades survey core curriculum subjects of language arts, including the following: reading, writing, grammar, mechanics, usage, listening, speaking, literature, viewing. MATHEMATICS
7th Grade Math: General mathematics course that incorporates pre-algebra strategies in preparation for upper level mathematics courses. Students will review general math operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using decimals, fractions, and percents. Students will also learn how to solve one-step algebraic equations. (Tamyra Rhynes)
8th Grade Pre Algebra: A branch of mathematics in which natural- and whole-number arithmetic is reviewed, an introduction of new types of numbers, properties of operations, and basic equations, including rules for manipulation of equations. (Justin Pierce)
 
READING
7th Grade Reading: In 7th grade reading class we do poetry books the first nine weeks.  We study different types of poems and the students write poems.  The 2nd -3rd  nine weeks we read stories and discuss different types of writing.   4th nine weeks we study Fairytales and we write our own book to read to elementary students. (Bradley McKnight, Tracy Whitaker)
8th Grade Reading: The middle school series, Reading with Purpose, is a powerful program designed to engage students in reading a variety of texts. We use an inquiry-oriented approach.  Students are motivated to read independently and on grade level.  DEAR (drop everything and read) days are offered twice a week and students are encouraged to read library books from the school library.  Students are required to read three reading counts books and pass with an 80% or better. The reading class includes problem solving, speaking, and listening skills.  Students should have vocabulary and comprehension levels of 8.5 or better upon completion of this course in May. (Tracy Whitaker)
 
SCIENCE
7th Grade Life Science: This course will include: studies of animal and plant cells along with cellular processes and cellular reproduction; introduction to genetics and the study of heredity; animal diversity with studies of vertebrates and invertebrate animals, along with animal behavior; introduction to human body systems, which will include the skeletal system, muscular system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system.  (Lee Umsted)
8th Grade Earth Science: This course is designed to increase academic achievement in the areas of natural, biological, and earth sciences. After completion of this course the student should have a basic understanding of the concepts that govern the scientific world(Lachelle Brown)
 
SOCIAL STUDIES
7th Grade Geography: This class will be studying the different countries throughout the world by focusing on climate, environment, resources, ethnic diversity, and cultures. Students will also use maps, tools, and technologies to analyze relationships between people, places, and environments of world regions. Students will also be able to define, recognize, and locate on appropriate maps and globes basic landforms and bodies of water, major cities, rivers, mountain ranges, regions, biomes, and countries of the world. This class will also be state tested in the spring. (Mandy Thompson)
8th Grade United States History: Demonstrate knowledge of the interrelationships, among individuals and their environment and the world in the past, present, and future. Analyze the fundamental beliefs, which resulted in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, which form the basis of the constitutional system of government of the United States. Use the knowledge, beliefs, and skills such as thinking, decision-making, and problem solving, learned in the social studies as a basis for action in a democratic society. Analyze the diversity and commonality among nations, races, cultures, and institutions. Develop an understanding of how governments work and what their role and responsibility in government is. (Debbie Moore, Greg Thralls)

SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special education teachers are to provide specially designed instruction in the classroom by means of co-teaching and collaborative teaching.  Program monitoring and consultation are utilized to ensure that the student is progressing in accordance with IEP objectives and goals.  Resource or lab services are available every period of the school day by certified personnel or highly qualified teachers. (Julie Brown, Jill Burns)
 
FINE ARTS
Art: Class will consist of learning about why artists create and the history of art. We learn about many different artists/cultures and their art. We cover the different styles and movements in art. We do a lot of drawing and shading in many of the assignments. Art class will experiment with different art media.   We will paint some and work with clay. We will use pencil, charcoal, pastel, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, pen & ink, markers, crayons, colored pencils, and collage techniques. We may write an artist research paper. (Jeana Holt)
Vocal Music: Students will learn vocal techniques for maximizing singing skills, general music reading and other general music skills as they pertain to vocal performing, and will memorize and perform various songs and perform them before audiences on and off campus. (Stephen Garner)
 
 PHYSICAL EDUCATION
     Competitive Athletics
          Baseball: Our goal in Junior High Baseball is to prepare ourselves for competitive athletic programs.  As a team we not only learn the concepts of the game of baseball, but also learn about self control and discipline as an individual.  The players are expected to participate and conduct themselves in a matter fitting a Calera baseball player. (Ricky Teafatiller)
          Basketball: This course will concentrate on the beginning of basketball skills and development including shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding and defending; court play will be included. Course objectives will include (1)demonstrate the use of basic basketball terminology, (2)demonstrate basic fundamental skills of basketball, (3)participate in the drills and practice situations, and (4)participate in game type situations. (Lachelle Brown, Justin Pierce)
         Softball: Students enrolled in competitive softball will learn and practice the fundamental skills of fastpitch and slowpitch softball. The skills of hitting, fielding, throwing and pitching will be taught along with the basic strategies of offense and defense. Students will learn teamwork and cooperation. They must provide their own glove and cleats to participate. This class is for any student wishing to play softball at the competitive level. (Randy Ellevold)

     Family and Consumer Sciences
           Family and Consumer Science I, Teen Living:  This is a comprehensive study intended to generate basic knowledge and skill of child development, clothing and textiles, consumer education, food nutrition, housing and home furnishings, and personal and family relationships.  Attention is also focused toward assisting students in the career study and participation in the FACS student organization FCCLA.  (Annette Goodwin)
